Trap Settings
The Trap Settings page in Site24x7 lets you manage SNMP trap configurations for your network devices. By default, Site24x7 automatically associates all SNMP traps with every network monitor you’ve added. However, if you want more control over which devices receive specific trap data, this page is where you can make those adjustments.
Why use the Trap Settings page?
While Site24x7 automatically associates all traps with your devices to simplify setup, there might be cases where:
- You want to disable trap monitoring for specific devices.
- You want to limit a particular trap to only a few critical devices.
- You need to fine-tune your trap processing setup for performance or organizational reasons.
The Trap Settings page allows you to enable or disable trap monitoring selectively for each network device or even a device category (like routers using a specific device template). The enabling or disabling action for trap processors can also be performed in bulk for several devices at once.
- All newly added network devices are automatically selected for existing traps by default. You can override this behavior anytime from the Trap Settings page.
- If you remove a device from the trap association, it won’t receive or process those traps in Site24x7.
Editing the Trap Settings
- Log in to your Site24x7 account.
- Navigate to Network > SNMP Traps.
- Click the Trap Settings tab.
- In the Settings field, select Trap Processor or On-Premise Poller. Selecting Trap Processor allows you to associate or disassociate a trap processor with a device, while selecting On-Premise Poller allows you to enable or disable trap processing for specific devices in a device category or even for devices sharing a common template. This action can also be performed in bulk for several devices at once.
NoteIf you select On-Premise Poller, the other fields may take a few minutes to reflect this, depending on the number of devices and On-Premise Pollers configured in your account.
- If you select Trap Processor in the Settings field, specify values for the following fields:
- Trap Processor: Select a trap processor that needs to be associated or disassociated with devices.
- Bulk Action: Select an action from the drop-down menu:
- Activate: Start processing traps on associated devices. No devices will be displayed if there are no suspended traps.
- Suspend: Temporarily pause trap processing for the selected devices.
- Add: Associate this processor with the selected devices and activate it.
- Delete: Remove the association and stop trap processing for the selected devices.
- Filter: Use the Filter drop-down menu to quickly search for and select monitors for trap processing based on specific attributes. Below are the available filter options:
- On-Premise Poller: This filters monitors by the associated On-Premise Poller, which is useful for narrowing down devices based on their location.
- Display Name: This filters monitors based on their display names as configured in the Site24x7 portal, helping you identify monitors by their user-defined labels.
- HostName: This filters monitors by their hostnames. Use this when you know the DNS name or system name of the device.
- IP Address: This filters monitors using their assigned IP address. You can search using full or partial IPs.
- Category: This filters monitors by their category (e.g., Switch or Router). Use this to group devices by their function or type.
- Template Name: This filters monitors based on the configuration template assigned to them, helping you locate devices managed under a specific device template.
- Select Monitors: This section displays all the devices that are currently eligible for the selected trap processor action. Select one or more devices to proceed. If no devices are listed, it means the selected action is not applicable to any monitored device.
- If you select On-Premise Poller in the Settings field, specify values for the following:
- Choose an On-Premise Poller: Select the required On-Premise Poller from the drop-down menu.
- Status: This shows whether the trap module is currently up or down for the selected On-Premise Poller. You can use this as a status indicator to check if trap processing is active. It also acts as a control switch—you can toggle between Enable and Disable to turn the trap module on or off for that On-Premise Poller.
- Port: Provide the value of the port in which the traps are received. Since it is usually 162, the default value is populated.
- In the Devices section, select values for the following fields:
- Category: Select a device category from the drop-down menu.
- Template: Select a device template from the drop-down menu.
- Devices: The Associated Device(s) section on the right shows all the devices currently associated with trap processors. The Unassociated Device(s) section on the left displays all the other devices that can be associated. Use the left (←) and right (→) arrow buttons between the two panes to add or remove devices from the trap processor association.
Note- The Trap Settings configured at the device level take higher precedence over those at the processor level.
- If you disassociate a device at the device level, trap processing will be completely shut down for that device, even if it’s still associated with a trap processor.
- This ensures that administrators have strict control over trap handling for individual devices.
- For example, if a device is assigned to a trap processor but is later disassociated at the device level via the On-Premise Poller settings, Site24x7 will treat that device as excluded from trap processing entirely.
- You can select up to 1,000 devices for bulk updates.
Example:
If a device is assigned to a trap processor but is later disassociated at the device level via the On-Premise Poller settings, Site24x7 will treat that device as excluded from trap processing entirely.
- If you select Trap Processor in the Settings field, specify values for the following fields:
- Click Update.
